Art Quilts

It’s August and in Alaska that means wild blueberries! A simple background with ‘berries’ stitched into the background. A girl in a floral skirt and hat holds a small bucket of berries. I took photos of the back of my recent quilts. The recent sketching has me appreciating the simple line drawings on the back.

A blue polka dot bike; what could be happier? You can’t help but enjoy the ride with a basket filled with flowers. Enjoy the ride – bicycle in blue dots (21” x 14”)

The flowers are fussy cut from floral print fabrics. It’s a fun challenge to find prints just the right size. I had quilted ‘journey to happiness’ when I made the background, but the bike covered some of the words so I added ‘bike happy’ after the bike was applied. I like that it now seems

A boy’s boy in black/dark gray. The fabric used to make the bike is a text print on dark gray. I used a knife edge binding on the bike quilts. I’ve been experimenting with how to do it quickly and efficiently. It’s a puzzle I like solving and hopefully someday mastering. Enjoy the ride –

Wish… When I was brainstorming ideas for the sentiments on these quilts, I read Anna Maria Horner’s about page and I was struck by the phrasing about embracing wonders and imperfect moments so I knew this quilt with a long haired brunette needed that sentiment. Color! I fussy cut my large handwriting text print to have ‘share joy’ on her face. The photo is in focus, the print on her shirt is just a bit psychedelic. I like it! She is thankful for color (14” x 20”)

Her short orange hair pops agains the dark blue background. A mixture of 3 fabrics make her shirt, sweater and skirt. The dimensional skirt was carefully folded and pressed to make that pattern. She sparks creativity in all who meet her (14” x 20”)

Days before I was to set up my art show, I was inspired to make 4 new art quilts with Anna Maria Horner fabrics. Here is the first one. I fussy cut the face to have ‘smile’ in just the right place. I used marbled fabric for the hair. She is wearing a dimensional skirt
