Heal a Heart Quilt

On Friday, October 17th, my husband posed a challenge; create a quilt with a giant anatomically correct heart on it. The quilt would be a gift for our friend’s mom who recently was diagnosed with heart issues.

Never one to pass up a challenge and it would make great gift, I found a medical drawing of a heart and printed it across 16 sheets of paper that I assembled and turned into a pattern on Saturday morning. I scoured my stash for fabrics, but I usually buy 1/2 yard or smaller so I didn’t have anything big another for the bottom part of the heart.

After a trip to a local quilt shop I returned home with a variety of Fossil Fern colors for the heart and a blue subtlety striped fabric for the front and a heart print for the back. The quilt top and back were pieced and then sandwiched with the batting. I quilted it with straight lines following the stripes.

I traced the heart pattern onto Wonder Under, ironed it to the fabrics and cut out the heart pieces. After trimming the quilt, I placed the right side of the pattern up, with parchment paper over it. I removed the release papers and assembled the heart, fusing it together once every piece was in place.

I outline stitched around the heart three or four times and bound the quilt with the blue stripe fabric.

The quilt was completed less than 8 hours after the trip to the quilt shop! It was a fabulous way to spend a Saturday and so worth it to see the photos of our friend’s mom hugging the quilt later in the week.
